Submitting a Play

Thank you for your interest in Gloucester Stage Company. Since its inception, development and presentation of new work has been a key component of the Gloucester Stage Company mission. We are happy to receive new works from emerging and well-established writers.

While we would like to support the development of plays of every scope and genre, we are focusing, at this juncture, on works that are producible at the Gloucester Stage. We appreciate creativity and originality, but large casts (over six actors), elephants, and water ballets are beyond our means!

About Our Venue
The Gloucester Stage is a 600 sq. foot thrust surrounded by 190 seats. There are no wings or fly space. Actors enter and exit via upstage and downstage entrances.

Submission Requirements
In order to give consideration to as many submissions as possible, we ask that you provide:
A cover page listing the title of your play and your name, email address, phone number, and mailing address. Also include a bulleted list of any readings, workshops, productions, awards that your play has received. Please forward any updates following your initial submission.

  • For musicals, include orchestra and choreography requirements/expectations.

  • A character breakdown that includes characters’ names, ages, genders, options for double casting, and a descriptive phrase about each character.

  • For musicals, include vocal ranges required for each cast member.

  • A brief synopsis of your play (no more than 250 words). Rather than making a pitch, please focus on the premise, plot and themes of the piece.

  • An excerpt from your play, no more than ten pages.

  • For musicals, submit audio demo of no more than ten minutes.
We will contact you to obtain a full copy of your script (and score) should we wish to read it in its entirety.

Email submissions to ad@gloucesterstage.com Please label the subject of your email as “Submission: (your last name).”
    Example: Submission: Shakespeare
In the body of your email please include only the title of your play and your full name. All other information should be organized as outlined above in an attachment in Microsoft Word (or comparable text format). Head each page with your last name, and number all pages consecutively.

If you would prefer to submit via mail, post submissions to
