Left Leaning Dad
An evening of standup comedy for the people who march and the people who would if they could find a babysitter.
Featuring comedian Mike Dorval with special guests Nonye Brown-West, Jiayoung Li, Kwasi Mensah, and Laura Severse, a fabulous night of comedy on Cape Ann.
Mike Dorval “One of Boston’s Best”. In a city famous for great comedians, that’s how The Boston Globe described Mike Dorval. After doing comedy for only three months, Mike won the New Hampshire Comedy Festival, beating out some of the most established comics in New England and soon became one of the youngest headliners in Boston history. Mike has been featured in Comedy Central’s Laugh Riots, numerous television commercials, and stars in the upcoming independent film, “Dick Spicketts”. Most recently he toured overseas for the USO, entertaining thousands of US military personnel abroad and released his first live comedy album entitled, “We need to talk…”. Mike’s takes on his Catholic upbringing, love life, and the insanity of the world around him have entertained audiences at colleges and clubs across the country and prompted The Boston Herald to exclaim, “Michael Dorval is hilarious!”
Nonye Brown-West is a Nigerian-American comedian who works theaters, clubs, and colleges throughout the United States. She has been featured in the Boston Globe’s Rise column as a “Comic to Watch.” Nonye is the host of the Women in Comedy Festival’s monthly show at ImprovBoston and she is associate producer of the Boston Comedy Chicks.
Jiayong Li bid farewell to his family in Beijing and embarked on a journey of mathematical study at MIT. Along the way, he came upon stand-up comedy, and started delivering his cerebral material in a calm and comfortable voice. He was one of the New Faces at Montreal Just for Laughs in 2017.
Kwasi Mensah bridges the gap between insightful observations about race and still thinking he could be a Power Ranger when he was 15. He’s opened for SNL’s Sasheer Zamata, Aparna Nancherla, and W. Kamau Bell. He also co-produces Laughing Liberally Boston, a show that combines comedy with progressive politics. He’s been featured in SF Sketchfest, the Boston Comedy Festival, The Comedy Exposition in Chicago, and just recorded his first hour of stand up titled “Not From Around Here”.
Laura Severse – As a streetwise Boston native, devoted wife, working mother of two, storyteller and stand-up comic, Laura brings her hard-working, and heartfelt approach to life to stages across the country. Laura finds the humor in everything from climbing the corporate ladder to the trials and tribulations of raising two young children in the heart of a changing city in the midst of a changing world. Audiences have no choice but to swept up in the joy, pathos and sheet excitement of a city kid who’s seen it all and can’t wait for more. Laura’s attitude is equal parts bold, brash, kind, and gentle, but always gut-wrenchingly funny. She is a true Bostonian with a killer accent and her comedy reflects her true nature: honest and hilarious. Laura is a member of MassMouth and performs regularly on the WGBH program Stories from the Stage. She has performed all over the country from San Diego to Washington, DC and has become a staple of New England comedy. This year Laura was a featured performer in both the Women in Comedy Festival and Thunderfest Comedy Festival, she performed in the Boston Comedy Festival Showcase and hosted a New York/Boston Comedy Chicks Showcase for CinderBlock Comedy Festival. Laura is also a producer for the Boston Comedy Chicks and Dot Comedy.
