Artist's Bio

Miranda Russell is thrilled to be returning to Gloucester Stage, more than 20 years after she last performed in this magical space. At home on the stage her whole life, her early years in theater served her well in her ability to find and deliver the story within the song. She is widely considered a moving vocalist and nuance performer, and her concerts center on interpretations of the music of the great songwriters of our day. She commits fully to every song and her lively stage vibe continues to make her a much sought-after performer; she “will knock your socks off should you be wearing any this close to the beach” (Boston Phoenix)

Miranda’s performance centers on nuanced treatments of a truly eclectic repertoire. Her interpretation and delivery of popular songs by such luminaries as Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, and Richard Thompson have become crowd-favorites in her pop repertoire. Joined by world class backing musicians, Miranda has equally delighted critics and audiences with American Songbook standards, folk ballads, and up-tempo jazz hits. Her haunting French-language rendition of La Vie en Rose and her spot-on delivery of Richard Thompson’s iconic 1952 Vincent Black Lightning have earned her die-hard fans online (as well in real life!).

Longstanding Gloucester Stage patrons will remember her from successful summer seasons at Gloucester Stage Company in the 1990’s. At GSC she delighted audiences in Still Crazy: A Tribute to the Music of Paul Simon; Tapestry: A Celebration of the Music of Carole King; Fascinating Rhythm, George and Ira Gershwin; and Berlin to Broadway with Kurt Weill. In addition to many years of professional and regional performances in plays and musicals, Miranda studied theater at Emerson College, directing at Harvard University, and classical voice and music therapy at Loyola University of New Orleans College of Music. She holds a B.A. in Human Services with a concentration in expressive arts therapies from Lesley University. She has recorded three albums including All The Pretty Little Horses, an award-winning lullaby collection, and Embrace, the double CD/DVD release recorded live at Shalin Liu Performance Center in Rockport. Locally, she has appeared most recently at the Larcom and Cabot Theaters in Beverly, and for five years sold out weekends at the Shalin Liu. Her days are now spent mainly running the family business Russell Orchards in Ipswich with her husband Doug.
